How to have a healthy Halloween

The youngsters are counting down the days before Halloween, and they look adorable in their costumes! You may already be prepared for a sugar surge but whether you’re hosting a party with friends or trick-or-treating around the neighbourhood this holiday can be a little bit harder for people trying to make healthier decisions. In this blog, we will discuss ways to make Halloween fun but a little bit healthier and less stressful.

For the Trick or Treaters

  • Trick or treat bag- Use a smaller collection bag for your child. If you encourage your kids to take one piece of candy per house they will be able to experience more houses while also not filling their bag up in a short amount of time.
  • Fill up first – Every kid gets excited along the route seeing their favourite candy and wanting to dig in but if you give your kids a meal before trick or treating begins they are less tempted to snack along the way.
  • Planning your route – You can make the trick-or-treat walk a fun activity for all the family while getting that extra exercise in.  As parents it can be very easy just to jump in and out of the car from house to house however setting goals of how many houses you’ll visit or competing in teams can make it that even but more exciting and healthier for everyone.

For the Parents/Party Hosts

  • Play with healthy foods – incorporate healthy snacks into party activities like bobbing for apples and decorating fruits like characters eg monsters
  • Keep the kids and other parents active – Have loads of physical activity games such as dance competitions, pumpkin toss and monster races.
  • Frightful foods- Serve healthier snacks dressed up in the Halloween theme. there are a bunch of ways to get creative with foods to give them that frightful design the kids will love eg banana ghosts or apples with monster mouths.

Too Much Candy?

Have your children come home with masses amount of trick-or-treat sweets that you don’t know what to do with? here are some ideas so they don’t go to waste:

  • spread the sweets into lunch boxes or after-school treats to keep them from eating them all at once
  • Add sweets and chocolates to your baking for fun activities
  • Save it to fill a pinata for the next celebration or birthday
  • Use it for arts and crafts projects like gingerbread houses

Self-discipline

There can be many reasons for you deciding to want to choose healthier options this Halloween whether that be you are trying to stay healthy, loose weight or keep the kids from having a crazy sugar rush. It can be quite daunting with all the added temptation of sweet treats everywhere whether that be you just have to take the kids trick or treating or host a party or even just stay at home with kids knocking at the door.

Remember the celebration only comes around once a year and it is okay to enjoy it. You can still have the odd sweet treat to celebrate and enjoy while also having restrictions on what you eat or your kids this holiday but remember everything in moderation and keep that healthy balance.
